Nice Dutch RIA: Watermanager

Published by at 15:20 under Wayback Archive

The WaterManager application allows you to virtually control the water heights in the river areas of the Netherlands. The goal is to give you an impression on how difficult this task is!

The way it works is based on the reality; this is how we keep our country ‘dry’. About 50% of The Netherlands would have been taken by the sea if our water was not managed.

This RIA allows you to take your own actions to manage the water and you can see what the effect of the action will be. You can roll over a river area to see the actions with the best chance for success. Click the area to go into the management module.

In this management module there are four main areas:

  • A list of actions (left top, ‘maatregelen’) that you can select from. This is quite complex because if you select a specific action, some other actions are disabled and some not. It’s up to you to find the best combination.
  • A graph (left bottom) displaying water hight details for the water area like the current height and the expected height after your actions;
  • A graph (right bottom) showing the effects of your action on the safety in the area, the costs, affected houses (some of them need to be given up for the safety of the region) and the ‘quality’ of the remaining space.
  • A detailed view on the selected action (right top)

This is one of the most complex RIAs that I have seen in my region. Great work by Ben from FlashZone.nl.

    Both links work fine for me. Maybe it was a temporary problem.

    Ey Waldo, Quite the surprise to see the Watermanager mentioned on the web. Cheers :). It was a great project to do using Flash, and even better news there are many more to follow. Clients love the end results when they see things like this and are lately getting thirsty for more!

    Great fun to build them also!

    Ben, I’d like to understand more about the company you work for and which organisations you build these RIAs for. Would love to have some more information from you in my mailbox 🙂

    Are you going to be at one of the Dutch Flash events the upcoming months?

    Check your mail then 🙂 Although you might not be able to read it until you get back according to the out of office mail. Cheers.
