Welcome Flash Player 7.0 r19

Published by at 21:51 under Wayback Archive

Macromedia today released a new version of Flash Player 7, versioned 7,0,19,0. My auto update notification is set to check each 2 weeks, so I am not sure when it will prompt me to update. I’m not even sure whether I’ll wait for it to happen or whether I’ll just trigger the install myself 😉 This version contains several fixes as well as improvements.

You can read about the changes in the Flash Player 7 Release Notes. Cool is that we now support Auto Update Notification for Netscape and Mozilla based browsers on Windows (r14 was only for IE Active X).

Another update has to do with unpredictable Shared Object locations to improve client side web security. From what I understood, it’s not best practice that someone can predict where the files will be stored, even though I have not heard of any issue because of this. So as far as I understood, we just worked according to best practices now).

There is now also support flexible policy file locations. I admit, I have to read it better to really understand why this flexibility was needed. Unfortunately I don’t have enough experience with these files to have faced this problem. All other changes are bug fixes.

Let me know what you think about it!

  1. When can we expect a scriptable plugin for OSX Netscape? Since 7.1 came out, and its Mach-O binaries, Flash has had a hole in its Javascript support. Netscape 7.01 and 7.02 were scriptable and we could allow them to see our Flash, now we have to disallow the latest Netscape.

FYI, I’ve heard the auto-update notification for the Flash Player update has been postponed to early January.

Yeah I heard that as well. Interesting… we’ll have to wait a bit longer 🙂
